How to use voice typing

  1. Open HeyScribe and choose Voice typing

    It is the first tab. Pick your language and your microphone from the menus.

  2. Click the microphone and speak

    The status shows Listening and your words appear as you talk. Click the microphone again to stop.

  3. Edit, clean up and copy

    Use Fix punctuation, Clean up text or Summarize if you want them, then press Copy text and paste it where you need it.

Voice typing tips that save you time

Voice typing is quickest when you stop treating it like typing. You do not need to speak slowly, spell things out or say punctuation. Speak the way you would explain something to a colleague, and let HeyScribe handle capital letters and full stops.

Make voice typing more accurate

  • Choose the right language. A language mismatch is the most common cause of odd results.
  • Pick the best microphone. Use the microphone menu to switch from a distant laptop mic to a headset.
  • Say names and jargon clearly. Unusual names are the words most likely to need a quick edit afterward.
  • Review before you send. Skim the text once. It takes seconds and catches the odd wrong word.

What is voice typing?
Voice typing means writing with your voice instead of a keyboard. You speak and the words are typed out for you. It is also called dictation or speech to text.
Which browsers does HeyScribe voice typing work in?
It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, as long as you allow microphone access when your browser asks.
Why does my browser ask for microphone permission?
Your browser needs your permission before any website can use the microphone. Click Allow. You can change this later in your browser’s site settings.
Can I voice type in a language other than English?
Yes. Choose from 50+ languages in the menu above the text box, including regional variants such as English (UK) and Portuguese (Brazil).
Does voice typing work without the internet?
No. HeyScribe sends your speech to a speech recognition service to turn it into text, so it needs a connection. Your draft is kept in your browser, so you will not lose it if you drop offline.
How many minutes does voice typing use?
Voice typing counts the time you spend listening. The free plan includes 20 minutes in total, and the sidebar always shows how many you have used.
