Getting the best results when you speak to text

Speaking to text works best when your voice is the loudest thing the microphone hears. That is true of every speech recognition system, and it explains most of the difference between a great result and a messy one.

Five quick wins

  • Move closer. Mouth to microphone distance matters more than microphone price.
  • Pause between thoughts. Short pauses help the system decide where sentences end.
  • Avoid talking over other sound. Music, TV and other voices all get transcribed.
  • Say numbers and names slowly. These are the easiest things to mishear.
  • Check the language menu. It should match the language you are speaking.

Speak to text on your phone

On a phone, open HeyScribe in your browser and allow microphone access once. Many people find speaking is the fastest way to send a long message or capture a to-do list on the move. Prefer to keep typing but need a recording turned into text? Use audio to text.

If you are looking for something that does more than short dictation, such as a running transcript of a conversation, see live transcribe or talk to text.
