How to live transcribe

  1. Open Live transcription

Name your session, choose your language, and pick an audio source: your microphone, or a browser tab for online meetings.

  2. Press Start session

Allow microphone access. The transcript starts to fill in with timestamps, and a LIVE badge and timer show the session is running.

  3. End the session

Press End session. The transcript is saved to your library with a summary and action items you can copy or export.

Live transcription that is easy to follow

Timestamped lines

Each line is stamped with the time it was said, so notes are easy to cross-reference later.

Microphone or meeting audio

Capture the room with your microphone, or a Chrome or Edge tab to transcribe an online meeting.

Pause and resume

Pause during a break or off-record chat, and pick up where you left off.

Saved automatically

The transcript is saved as you go, so closing the tab by accident does not lose it.

Summary when you finish

Get an overview, key points and action items from the whole session.

50+ languages

Pick the language of the conversation before you start.

Live transcribe without installing anything

Live transcription apps usually mean installing something on a phone. HeyScribe runs in the browser you already have open, on a laptop, tablet or phone, so you can start a session in seconds, including on a computer where you cannot install software.

Words appear in two stages. First, a faint draft of the sentence you are hearing, which updates as the speaker continues. Then, when they pause, it settles into a finished line with a timestamp. That makes it easy to follow along without waiting for the end of a sentence.

Getting a good live transcript

  • Place the microphone near the speaker. For a lecture, that means close to the lecturer, not the back of the room.
  • Use tab audio for online meetings. It captures the meeting sound directly, which is clearer than picking it up through speakers.
  • Choose the spoken language first. Language is set per session.
  • Name the session. You will thank yourself when you search your library later.

Live captions for people who are hard of hearing

Seeing speech as text can help people who are deaf or hard of hearing follow a conversation or class. HeyScribe is an automatic tool, so it is not a replacement for a professional captioner where one is required, but it is a handy extra layer. For the technical background, read about real-time transcription.

After the session you can polish the transcript, or use AI transcription tools to summarize it.

When to live transcribe

Meetings

Follow along, then share a summary and the action items.

Get the text as you talk, with timestamps for the best bits.

Conversations

Read what is being said when it is hard to hear.

Webinars and events

Capture a live talk as text while you listen.

Brainstorms

Record ideas as they are said, then sort them afterward.

Frequently asked questions

What is live transcribe?
Live transcribe turns speech into text as it happens. You see the words appear on screen during a meeting, class or conversation, instead of waiting for a recording to be processed afterward.
Do I need to install an app?
No. HeyScribe runs in your browser. Open it, choose Live transcription and press Start session.
Can I live transcribe a Zoom, Teams or Google Meet call?
Yes, on desktop Chrome or Edge. Choose Browser tab as the audio source, pick the meeting tab and turn on Share tab audio. For desktop apps that are not in a browser tab, use your microphone near the speakers instead. Always tell people if you are transcribing a meeting.
Does live transcription label different speakers?
Live transcription shows a running, timestamped transcript. If you need labels for each speaker, record the session and upload the recording with speaker detection turned on. See audio to text.
How accurate is it?
Good audio gives good results. Distance from the speaker, background noise and accents all affect it, so place the microphone well and skim the transcript afterward for anything important.
Is it free?
You can start free. The free plan includes 20 minutes in total, and live sessions count the time they are listening.
