Which voice to text option should you use?

HeyScribe has three ways to convert voice to text. They all use the same account and the same minutes.

How voice to text works, and how to get better results

Voice to text, also called speech recognition, uses a machine learning model that has learned to match sounds to words. When you speak into HeyScribe, your microphone audio is streamed to a speech model and the words come back as text a moment later. Recordings are handled differently: the whole file is processed together, which gives the model more context and usually a cleaner result.

Accuracy depends mostly on the audio you give it. A clear voice, a decent microphone and a quiet room matter more than anything else, and they are all in your control.

Tips for accurate voice to text

  • Get close to the microphone. A headset or earbuds with a mic beats a laptop mic across the room.
  • Speak in full phrases at a natural pace. You do not need to talk slowly or robotically.
  • Pick the right language first. The language menu sits above the text box. For recordings you can leave it on auto-detect.
  • Reduce background noise. Close windows, mute notifications, and avoid music behind your voice.

Voice to text vs. a voice assistant

A voice assistant is built to answer short commands. A voice to text tool is built to capture everything you say, accurately, for as long as you keep talking. HeyScribe is the second kind: it is made for long notes, drafts and recordings, with editing, AI clean-up and export built in.

Frequently asked questions

Is voice to text free?
You can start free. The free plan includes 20 minutes in total, with no credit card needed. If you need more minutes, you can upgrade from inside the app.
How accurate is voice to text?
It depends on the audio. With a clear voice, a good microphone and little background noise, results are usually very good. Heavy accents, overlapping speakers, music and noisy rooms lower accuracy, so it is worth skimming the text before you share it. You can edit anything in the app.
Does voice to text work on my phone?
Yes, in most modern mobile browsers that allow microphone access, such as Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. Open HeyScribe in your browser, sign in, and tap the microphone.
Can I convert a voice recording instead of speaking live?
Yes. Choose Upload file and add an MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4 or MOV recording. You get a transcript with timestamps, and speaker labels if you turn on speaker detection. See audio to text for details.
Which languages are supported?
Live voice to text supports 50+ languages, and file transcription supports 90+ languages with auto-detect. Choose your language from the menu before you start.
Do you keep a recording of my voice?
Voice typing and live transcription do not save audio recordings. The resulting text stays in your browser unless you copy or export it, or turn on optional cloud backup (a paid feature). Uploaded files are processed in the cloud to create the transcript; see our privacy policy for details.
