How to set up real-time transcription

  1. Choose your audio source

Pick a microphone for a room, or a browser tab to transcribe an online meeting or webinar.

  2. Set the language and start

Select the spoken language and press Start session. You will be asked to allow audio access.

  3. Review, summarize and export

End the session to save the transcript. Copy it, export it, or generate a summary and action items.

What real-time transcription gives you

Streaming results

Audio is streamed continuously, and the text appears within moments of being spoken.

Live drafts that firm up

You see the sentence in progress, then it settles into a finished line.

Tab audio capture

Transcribe a meeting or webinar in another browser tab, straight from its audio.

Timestamps

Every finished line carries the time it was spoken.

Auto-save

Your transcript is saved while the session runs, not only at the end.

Summary and action items

One click after the session turns the transcript into an overview and next steps.

Real-time transcription vs. transcribing a recording

They use the same kind of speech recognition but make different trade-offs.

How real-time transcription works

Your browser captures audio from the microphone, or from a tab you choose to share, and sends it in small slices over a secure connection to a speech recognition service. The service returns two kinds of result: interim results, which are its best guess so far and keep changing, and final results, which are settled once the speaker pauses. HeyScribe shows interim text in a lighter color and turns it into a stamped line when it is final.

Because the model works with only the audio it has heard so far, real-time transcription can be a little less accurate than transcribing a finished recording. If accuracy matters most, record the session as well and upload the recording afterward.

Tips for a reliable real-time session

  • Use a stable connection. The audio is streamed continuously, so a wired or strong Wi-Fi connection helps.
  • Keep the tab open. Browsers may slow down background tabs, so keep the session visible if you can.
  • Choose the language per session. Switching languages mid-session is not supported, so start a new session for a new language.
  • Use a headset for your own voice. Use tab audio for everyone else.

Want the basics first? Read about speech to text. Just need to write by voice? Try voice typing.

Frequently asked questions

What is real-time transcription?
It is speech to text that happens while someone is speaking. Instead of uploading a recording and waiting, you see the transcript form live.
How fast is real-time transcription?
Text usually appears within a moment of the words being spoken. Exact speed depends on your internet connection and the audio.
Can I transcribe audio from another browser tab?
Yes, in desktop Chrome and Edge. Choose Browser tab as the audio source, pick the tab, and turn on Share tab audio.
Does it work on my phone?
Microphone transcription works in most modern mobile browsers. Tab audio capture is only available in desktop Chrome and Edge.
Do you store my audio?
No audio is stored for live sessions. The transcript is saved in your browser, and in your private cloud backup only if you turn that optional paid feature on. See the privacy policy for details on what is sent to speech recognition providers.
What happens if my connection drops?
HeyScribe tries to reconnect automatically. Your transcript so far is already saved, so you will not lose it.
