How to dictate well: a writer’s guide
Dictating feels strange for the first five minutes and natural after that. Most people speak far faster than they type, so a dictated draft gets down on the page quickly. The trick is to treat the first pass as raw material. Say what you mean, keep moving, and edit afterward.
A simple dictation workflow
- Outline first. Jot three or four headings so you know what you are going to say.
- Dictate one section at a time. Pause between sections to start a fresh paragraph.
- Do not fix as you go. If a word is wrong, keep talking. You can correct it in the text box later.
- Run AI clean-up once, at the end. It removes filler and tightens up the text without changing your meaning.
Dictation for people who find typing hard
Many people dictate because typing is slow, tiring or uncomfortable. Dictation can give your hands a break, and a text box you can also edit by keyboard means you are never stuck. If you use a screen reader or other assistive technology, HeyScribe is built with standard buttons, labels and keyboard navigation.
HeyScribe dictation runs in the browser, so you copy the finished text into the app you are using. If you want to transcribe a recording instead, try audio to text. For talking through a whole meeting, see live transcribe.
