Free Online Voice and Video Recorder

Record audio or video straight from your browser, with no account and no download. Play it back and save the file. Want the words too? Sign in and turn on the live transcript.

  • No sign-in to record
  • Audio or video
  • Download your recording

How to record audio or video online

  1. Choose audio or video

Pick Audio for your voice or Video to use your camera too, then press the button. Allow access when your browser asks.

  2. Record

A timer and level meter show that it is working. You can pause and resume. For a live transcript, switch to Record + live transcript first (sign-in needed).

  3. Stop, play back and download

Play your recording, then download the audio or video file. With a transcript you can also copy the text or download it as a .txt file.

Two ways to record, one page

Record only: no sign-in

Open the page and record. The audio or video stays in your browser and is not sent to us.

Audio or video

Record just your voice, or your camera and voice together.

Download either way

Download your recording whether or not you are signed in. The format depends on your browser, usually WebM, MP4 or M4A.

Live transcript with an account

Sign in to see your words written as you speak, in 50+ languages. The transcript is saved to your library.

Pause and resume

Stop for a moment and carry on in the same recording.

Private by default

Record only mode never leaves your device. Only the transcript mode streams your speech to a speech recognition service.

Record only, or record with a live transcript?

Both modes let you play back and download your recording.

Getting a clean recording

A browser recorder is only as good as the microphone, the camera and the room. A few small changes make a recording sound and look better, and make a transcript more accurate.

Tips for better audio and video

  • Use a headset or earbuds with a microphone if you have one. It is the biggest upgrade over a laptop microphone.
  • Pick a quiet room and close the window. Fans, traffic and keyboard noise show up in the recording.
  • For video, face the light. A window in front of you works better than one behind you.
  • Do a five second test before your real take: record, stop and play it back.

What happens to your recording

The recording is made inside your browser tab so you can play it back and download it. In Record only mode nothing is sent to HeyScribe at all. In Record + live transcript mode the audio is also streamed to a speech recognition service to produce the transcript, and the transcript is saved to your library. HeyScribe never stores the recording itself, so it disappears when you close or refresh the page unless you download it. See the privacy policy.

Need a transcript of a file you already have? See audio to text or video to text. Want to write by talking instead? Try voice typing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the recorder really free?
Yes. Recording audio or video with no transcript is free, needs no account and no download.
Do I need to sign in?
Not to record. Sign in or create a free account only if you want a live transcript while you record, or to record for longer than 5 minutes.
Can I download my recording if I am not signed in?
Yes. Download works for everyone, in both modes. Your recording is not stored on our side, so download it before you close or refresh the page.
How long can I record?
Without an account, a recording stops at 5 minutes and you can start another. With a free account you can record up to 100 minutes a month without a transcript, and paid plans have no limit. With a live transcript, your plan’s minutes apply instead.
What file format do I get?
It depends on your browser. Chrome, Edge and Firefox usually produce WebM (or Ogg for audio) and Safari produces MP4 or M4A. Most players and editors open them, and free converters can turn them into MP3 or MP4.
Is my recording uploaded?
In Record only mode, no. It never leaves your browser. With a live transcript, your speech is streamed to a speech recognition service so it can be turned into text, but the recording itself is still not stored by HeyScribe.
Why does my browser ask for the camera or microphone?
A website needs your permission before it can use them. Click Allow. If you blocked it by mistake, click the lock icon in the address bar and allow it for this site.
Can I record another browser tab or an online meeting?
This page records from your microphone and camera. To transcribe the audio of a meeting in another browser tab, use real-time transcription in the app.
